I believe it is only a matter of time before China is the largest economy. Whether this occurs in 10 years or 20 is beside the point. What matters is the trend.

Yet this promising trend will also bring major challenges. One is the process of urbanization, particularly in mega-city dimensions like Guangzhou and other cities in Guangdong Province. The primary challenge is to ensure sustainable development. This means meeting the needs of a growing urban population without condemning future generations to unacceptable levels of pollution, disastrous climatic disturbances and depleted resources. It means finding financially feasible solutions for providing adequate power, water, healthcare, waste disposal and so on to millions of urban residents.

The task is formidable. So formidable, in fact, that no city and no central government can hope to master it alone. All stakeholders in the future, from the government, municipal authorities and business community to the general public, must work together, and work hard, toward this goal.

In this context, the advantages of strong public-private partnership are obvious. Close cooperation between the public and the private sectors enables the partners to share risks, responsibilities and benefits. We believe the future will belong to partner companies that are willing, and able, to act in this team spirit.

As one of the world’s largest electronic and electrical engineering companies and a leading provider of infrastructure around the globe, Siemens has long been committed to public-private

partnership. We see ourselves as an integral pan of the societies we serve, as an active and influential voice in environmental matters, and as a good corporate citizen in the global community as well as in each of the 190 countries where we operate. Our deepest commitment is helping shape society by providing beneficial solutions that promote sustainable urban development. In short, we see ourselves as an architect of the future. (308 words)

【Note】拙荆=my humble wife,山芭婆=a rustic woman
